Razor Shaving Tips

Will I Get a Better, Closer Shave With a Straight Razor?

Straight razors are great, however, the shave is not always the closest, but, it’s smoother and lasts longer. Just remember not to do it more than every two days, and never attempt it if you are in a rush. You want to take time when it comes to razor shaving.

Preparation

As with any shave, you first need to soften your skin and open the pores before taking a straight razor to it. If it is your first time using one, then you need to prepare your skin properly in order to avoid a serious burn. Jump in a hot shower, which will soften the hairs and give you a smoother shave. Then apply some pre-shave oil to condition your skin, followed by a transparent gel.

The Hold

Hold the razor at a 30-degree angle away from your face, because if you hold the razor too flat it will just tear the stubble, and if it is held too steep, it will cut your skin. Keep your grip firm, adjusting it as and when deemed necessary for the different contours of your face, such as the upper lip and chin. The key is to pull the skin taut with your free hand and applying gentle pressure with the blade.

The First Strokes

Choose one side of your face, and begin at your sideburn, and move downward. Take your first stroke at a downward slant, from the top of your cheek close to your ear. The stroke needs to be short and even and without any jerks or chopping. After each stroke, rinse the blade in some hot water and continue. Try not to pull or drag the razor, and remember to keep your skin taut.
