Short Hair Twist 101

The Pros and Cons of Mini Twists for Natural Hair

Short hair twist styles are basically tiny twists, that are much smaller than the diameter of a pencil. In many cases, they are so small the hair may look loose rather than twisted.

Good:

Mini twists do last longer, ranging from 3 – 6 weeks than their larger counterparts. And, because they are so small, they do not frizz or age as quickly. This is good news for people that want to leave their natural hair alone for weeks at a time.

Not only do these last longer, but they also allow for more versatility in styling. This is because they are so small, making it easier to achieve a range of other styles than with larger twists. A lot of the styles can mimic loose natural hair.

Not so great:

Mini twists do take some time to install or take out. Which can be somewhat of a challenge if you have to be somewhere in a hurry. In terms of having patience, watching a few movies or television shows do help to pass the time. However, when it comes to having to be somewhere, some naturals prefer to start their mini twists in the front, so they can fake the finished look if they fail to complete the twists in time.

Bad:

Single-strand knots and locking are more likely to occur in mini twists, especially for those that have tightly-coiled, kinky strands. In order to prevent this, try not to wear this style for more than 4 weeks. Five or even six weeks is pushing the limit, but then again, if your hair is able to handle it, by all means, go for it. Twisting techniques do matter; as the tighter and stronger your twisting is, the longer you are able to wear the style. And, redoing the twists every week or every other week along the edges and nape could be necessary to reduce locking and meshing.
